Urgent Care Centers in Columbia, Maryland

When someone is sick or hurt, the useful question is not which urgent care has the nicest website. It is which one is open, takes your insurance, and can do the test or X-ray you may need without sending you somewhere else.

Columbia has several solid options, but they are not interchangeable. This guide explains what each location is best equipped to handle and what to check before you leave home.

Urgent care is not emergency care

Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency

Urgent care is meant for illnesses and injuries that need prompt attention but are not life-threatening. Severe chest pain, serious trouble breathing, signs of a stroke, major trauma, loss of consciousness, or another potentially life-threatening problem belongs with 911 or the nearest emergency department.

Editor’s Pick

MedStar Health Urgent Care in Columbia

MedStar Health Urgent Care is my first place to check when rapid testing or an X-ray may be part of the visit. The Columbia center lists immediate-result PCR testing for strep, flu, COVID-19, and RSV, participates with most major insurance plans, and shows the day’s X-ray availability on its website.

The on-site X-ray setup is another reason it earns the top spot. In our experience, the images have been impressively clear and high-resolution, and having them taken during the same visit can make a stressful injury evaluation much simpler. Walk-ins are welcome, although reserving a place online can save time.

There is another advantage that is easy to overlook: this urgent care is part of the larger MedStar Health system. MedStar also provides primary care, cardiology, gastroenterology, and physical therapy. Those services are not all located inside the Cedar Lane clinic, but the broader network can be useful when an urgent-care visit points to follow-up care.

Details checked September 9, 2026: Hours, testing, X-ray staffing, insurance participation, and check-in rules can change. Check the center’s official page before leaving, especially at night, on weekends, or on holidays. An online reservation usually holds a place in line, not a guaranteed appointment time.

1. MedStar Health Urgent Care

6334 Cedar Lane | Listed hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily

MedStar is the strongest all-around choice in this group when testing and imaging may matter. Its official Columbia page lists care for patients of all ages, immediate-result PCR testing for several common respiratory infections, urine and mono testing, rapid HIV and STD testing, and X-ray service when available.

The website’s live X-ray status is genuinely helpful. It gives you a chance to see whether imaging is available before you make the trip. MedStar says it participates with most major health plans, but the company also tells patients to confirm that the individual plan is in network.

MedStar’s size matters after the immediate problem is addressed, too. The health system includes primary-care clinicians and specialists in areas such as cardiology and digestive care, along with physical therapy and rehabilitation. That does not guarantee an automatic referral or a Columbia appointment, but it gives patients a broader MedStar network to explore if the urgent-care clinician recommends ongoing care.

2. Patient First Columbia

5900 Cedar Lane | Listed hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 365 days a year

Patient First Columbia is built around true walk-in convenience. No appointment is necessary, and the center lists on-site X-rays, laboratory testing, and medications. Those extra services can reduce the chance that a simple visit turns into three separate errands.

This is also a practical option when you want predictable weekend or holiday hours. Patient First says it participates with all major health insurance plans, but it is still worth checking the Maryland plan list and your own benefits before the visit.

3. University of Maryland Urgent Care in Columbia

5890 Waterloo Road | Listed hours: weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; weekends 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

UM Urgent Care accepts walk-ins and lets patients save a place in line online. The location says its board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners see patients of all ages.

The main appeal is the medical-system connection. If your visit leads to follow-up care, the broader University of Maryland network may be useful. The Waterloo Road campus also houses primary care, sports medicine, and several specialties, although urgent care has its own visit process.

4. FirstCall Medical Center at Columbia Crossing

6250 Old Dobbin Lane | Listed hours: weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; weekends 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FirstCall Medical Center handles acute illnesses, sprains, minor fractures, cuts, minor burns, and similar non-emergency problems. Its Columbia location lists on-site lab work and X-rays, accepts walk-ins, and offers online check-in.

This one is particularly useful if you like the idea of urgent and primary care under the same roof. FirstCall says it accepts most insurance plans. Confirm the exact plan before visiting, since “most” does not always mean every network variation.

5. PrimeDoc Columbia

5450 Knoll North Drive, Suite 160 | Listed walk-in hours: weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; closed Sunday

PrimeDoc Columbia is more of a primary-care practice with walk-in urgent services than a stand-alone, late-night urgent-care center. It treats acute illnesses and minor injuries and also offers telemedicine, routine primary care, physicals, and other ongoing services.

The earlier weekday opening can be convenient. Families should check the provider profile before bringing a child because PrimeDoc notes that pediatric age ranges vary by provider.

6. Elite Urgent Care

6100 Dobbin Road, Suite A | Listed hours: Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Elite Urgent Care lists X-rays, EKGs, COVID-19 testing, school and sports physicals, allergy and asthma care, abscess treatment, STD screening, and DOT exams among its services.

The tradeoff is the schedule. Elite closes earlier than MedStar, Patient First, UM, and FirstCall, and its published hours do not include Sunday. It may be a good daytime fit when one of its specific services matches what you need.

7. Concentra Urgent Care Columbia

6656 Dobbin Road | Listed medical-center hours: weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Concentra Columbia is a walk-in clinic with a strong occupational-health focus. It is especially relevant for workplace injuries, employer-directed exams, physical therapy, drug testing, and other job-related needs.

Because it keeps weekday business hours and serves many employer programs, it would not be my first choice for an evening or weekend family illness. For work-related care, however, it may be exactly the right place. Call first if you are unsure whether the center handles your particular non-occupational need.

What to Check Before You Go

  • Insurance: Confirm the exact location and service are in network. A company may accept your insurer while a particular plan or product remains out of network.
  • X-ray availability: Equipment may be on site while a qualified imaging professional is not available for every shift. Check the current status or call.
  • Age limits: Some centers treat all ages. Others vary by provider or service.
  • Online check-in: Reserving a place can reduce uncertainty, but medically urgent patients may be seen first.
  • What to bring: Carry a photo ID, insurance card, medication list, allergy information, and any relevant test results or discharge paperwork.

One Useful Columbia Detail

MedStar and Patient First are both on Cedar Lane, close to Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. That does not make urgent care a substitute for the emergency department, but it does make this part of Columbia a convenient place to compare two broad-service walk-in options.
