Costco is not where I go when I need one lemon and a quiet five-minute errand. It is where I go when the pantry has reached the point where every meal begins with a little negotiation, the paper towels are almost gone, or I have remembered that a birthday party needs more food than optimism.
For our household, the Columbia-area Costco has earned its place in the routine. The appeal is not that every item is a bargain, and it is definitely not that every trip is peaceful. The appeal is that a handful of carefully chosen purchases can cover groceries, party food, pet supplies, a pharmacy pickup, or even a tire question in one stop. The trick is knowing what Costco is good at and resisting the feeling that a 12-pack of something is automatically a wise decision.
Short answer: is Costco membership worth it?
It can be, especially for families, roommates who split staples, people who cook at home, and anyone who regularly buys a few predictable categories in bulk. It can also make sense for a one- or two-person household if you focus on things that keep well: pantry staples, frozen food, toiletries, paper goods, pet supplies, batteries, gift cards, or a planned big-ticket purchase.
It is a weaker fit if storage is already a problem, you shop only for fresh food in small amounts, or warehouse-size packages make you buy more than you would otherwise use. A membership is not a savings plan if half the produce ends up in the compost bin.
What a membership costs now
Costco’s standard Gold Star membership is currently $65 per year, and Executive membership is $130 per year. Each includes one household card for someone age 16 or older who lives at the same address. Executive members can earn a 2% annual reward on eligible Costco purchases, subject to Costco’s current terms and exclusions. The practical question is whether your household will make enough eligible purchases to justify the extra $65, not whether the words “2% back” sound appealing in isolation.
At the current difference, an Executive upgrade breaks even at about $3,250 in eligible annual Costco purchases. Gas, some services, and a few other categories do not count toward that reward, so check the current membership terms before doing your own math.
Where Costco genuinely helps our household
Food you will actually finish
The strongest grocery purchases are the ones with a predictable home. For us, that often means cheese, eggs, meat for the freezer, nuts, coffee, olive oil, frozen fruit, paper goods, and snacks that will be consumed before they become a guilty shelf monument. The selection changes, and I do not build a weekly meal plan around a particular brand being there. But Costco is very good at making a well-timed restock feel efficient.
The bulk size is the entire deal and the entire trap. A large package of cheese can be excellent value if you grate and freeze part of it, bring some to a gathering, or know your family will use it. It is not excellent value just because the price per ounce is lower.
Party food that saves a last-minute scramble
Costco is especially useful when you are feeding a group. Sheet cakes, bakery items, fruit trays, drinks, snacks, and prepared food can take a surprising amount of stress out of a birthday party or larger family gathering. Their custom cake options and ordering rules can vary by warehouse, so call or ask at the bakery before counting on a particular design, flavor, or lead time.

Meat and freezer planning
I like Costco best for meat when I know exactly what I am going to do with it. Ground turkey, chicken, and other family-size packages can make weeknight cooking easier, but only if I divide them into meal-size portions before they disappear into the freezer. Tires and services are worth comparing, not assuming

I compare the complete out-the-door price and the appointment situation with other local options. When the numbers work, it can be a sensible place to buy tires; when the schedule is packed, it can test a person’s spiritual growth.
The same principle applies to Costco services, travel, and gift cards: compare the exact offer, fine print, and availability rather than assuming the Costco name guarantees the best price on every day of the year.
What is different from the old Costco advice
Specific product prices, brands, and warehouse inventory are not reliable enough to publish as timeless advice. The warehouse changes constantly. A product that is excellent this month may be gone by the next visit, and a price on an old shelf tag is not a promise. I would rather give you the test I actually use: compare the unit price, make sure you have room, and decide whether your household will finish it.
Costco also carries a mix of organic, conventional, national-brand, and Kirkland Signature products. I would not describe it as a complete natural-food store, but it can be a helpful place to find certain organic or specialty items at a competitive unit price. The selection is part of the fun and part of the annoyance.
The Costco Anywhere Visa: useful only if you already manage credit carefully
Costco warehouses accept Visa credit cards, and the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi offers rewards in several categories. Its current reward structure includes 4% on eligible gas and EV charging purchases up to the annual limit, 3% on eligible restaurants and travel, 2% on eligible Costco and Costco.com purchases, and 1% on other purchases. Terms, limits, exclusions, and interest rates matter, so use the official card page rather than an old blog post when deciding.
I would only consider it if you pay the statement balance in full each month. Cash back is a nice rebate; interest charges are a much more efficient way to give it all back.
Small things that make the trip better
- Go with a list, but leave one or two spots open for a useful surprise.
- Do not buy a huge package of fresh food unless you have a freezing, sharing, or meal-prep plan.
- Check the warehouse’s current hours before you go, especially for pharmacy and tire-center visits.
- Use the current savings offers as a prompt to compare, not a command to buy.
- Remember that a crowded Saturday afternoon is not the only Costco experience. A quieter weekday visit can feel like an entirely different store.
One helpful exception: the pharmacy
Costco says a membership is not required to use its pharmacy. That does not mean every prescription, insurance arrangement, or service will be the right fit for every person, but it is worth knowing before assuming the pharmacy is off-limits. Confirm current details with the Costco Pharmacy or the local warehouse.
My bottom line
I keep the membership because we use it deliberately. It helps with staples, party food, freezer planning, occasional gift-card deals, and the sort of purchases that are easy to compare before buying. It does not replace a grocery store, a local market, or common sense about how much food fits in a refrigerator.
If you are curious, ask a Costco member you know what they buy there every month. Their answer will tell you more than a shiny display of oversized snacks ever could.
